This
module aims to challenge Eurocentric views of history that place Africa on the
periphery by introducing students to the key roles played by Africa and the
African Diaspora in the shaping of the modern world. It views Africans and
those of African descent not simply as the exploited, passive victims of
slavery, colonial rule and economic migration but as active agents of
historical change in Africa, the Caribbean, the United States and Britain. The
module also aims to enable students to begin to critically examine the
historical development of notions of ‘race’ and the emergence of modern racism,
as well as ideologies and strategies of resistance and affirmation such as the
various forms of Pan-Africanism.
