It could be argued that music theatre has reflected, commented on and challenged cultural and historical events since Ancient Greece. It’s influence has grown significantly over the last century and a half to become a widely referenced and influential populist medium. In this module we will trace the development of the genre both in the United States and the United Kingdom. With reference to the rich source material available we will analyse the disciplines involved and examine the relationships between text, subtext and the spectator in learning to interpret performance both in its historical context and for the modern audience.
